Hybrid Modeling of Persistent Shoreline Oil Residues on Abu Ali Island, Saudi Arabia: Extent, Degree, and Remediation Implications

چکیده

Extensive intertidal asphalt pavements and oiled sediment accumulations extend more than 20 km along the northern shoreline of Abu Ali Island, located north Jubail on Arabian (Persian) Gulf coast Saudi Arabia. This oiling likely originated from two platforms in Nowruz oil field, which spilled 1983 to 1985; this was one largest marine spills history, with impacts that were little known. In study, we used a novel methodology combined remote sensing analyses hybrid machine learning–geostatistical modeling field-collected data quantify distribution, extent, volume these contaminated sediments investigate mechanisms for their persistence support development remediation plans. After nearly 40 years, approximately 25,000 m3 remain, 50% buried underneath clean sediments. The presence exposed or subsurface carbonate beach rock ramps clearly influences ongoing by protecting them physical energy mobilization. These complicate potential options, 66% modeled pavement estimated be directly top contact rock. present persistent PAH toxicity continually shed smaller fragments when wave localized sheens liquid oil, presenting pathway chronic exposure biota.

Influence on Saudi Arabia

"Broadcast" theory is one of the common theories explaining how phenomena and ideas spread. It is used by researchers in different fields of study. Having studied broadcast theory and its different components, this article tries to represent whether Islamic revolution of Iran has exerted influence on Saudi Arabia. And if positive, how it has influenced and how much it has been. The results sug...

Extent and Degree of Shoreline Oiling: Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Gulf of Mexico, USA

The oil from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico was documented by shoreline assessment teams as stranding on 1,773 km of shoreline. Beaches comprised 50.8%, marshes 44.9%, and other shoreline types 4.3% of the oiled shoreline. Shoreline cleanup activities were authorized on 660 km, or 73.3% of oiled beaches and up to 71 km, or 8.9% of oiled marshes and associated habitats. O...

Effect of remediation strategy on crude oil biodegradation kinetics and half life times in shoreline sediment samples

Bioremediation, the process by which microorganisms degrade organic compounds to non-toxic or less toxic substances, has been widely used for cleanup of coastal ecosystems after oil spills. In this study, the hydrocarbon degradation rate and half lives in three bioremediation strategies (natural attenuation, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation) were compared in weathered crude oil (WCO) contami...

Oil prices, climate change--health challenges in Saudi Arabia.

In December, 2015, Saudi Arabia reported a US$98 billion budget deficit (about 15% of gross domestic product [GDP]) in 2015 with no improvement projected for 2016. Saudi Arabia has been resilient during oil price fluctuations in the past, so the new government budget came as a surprise. The new spending plan reflects several measures to curb subsidies, raise revenue, and improve healthy lifesty...
